A law was broken, there must be punishment?
Would Jesus think the crime of being an undocumented immigrant in a Christian nation fit the punishment of being sent back to a place of danger or being separated from their family?
There is a notion from many Christians that people who reside in the USA that are not documented are “law breakers” that deserve punishment. But does the crime fit the punishment? And what about grace? Isn’t that the central theme of Christianity?
The USA has closed it’s eyes to illegal immigration for decades and has benefited from the work of illegal immigrants in farming, construction, hospitality, and more. If you are skeptical of this statement, I encourage you to do your own research.
The influx of immigrants has no doubt also created a financial burden from those that have come here not to work, but to get their family out of a dangerous and corrupt situation. The USA is spending significant amounts of money for healthcare, housing, etc. due to immigrants. I don’t think anyone would argue with this. However, would that matter to Jesus? Would the same person that says to take care of the poor support the enforcement of govermental immigration laws?
And why do Christians care so much about that anyway? Is it because we live a comfortable life here in the richest nation on earth, the earth He created? We want to keep the wealth to ourselves so we can prosper? Is that what Jesus did? Since we believe Jesus was God, then technically, he owns everything because he created it. When he was on earth, did he amass a fortune for himself and live the good life? No, the Bible says he hung out with sinners, he had compassion on the less fortunate, the lowly. He took the lowly and humble position, why don’t more people who claim to follow Christ do the same thing?

Crimes do deserve punishment, I don't think Jesus would be against that. However, I don't know that He would want families separated over a civil infraction. It's hard to share the hope and love of Christ by saying "Jesus loves you, but you need to get out." How about we love them like Jesus?
